I often am asked how I got into this field and why have I stayed with it. I started with TSS, in 2003 without much knowledge of the MR community. My narrow minded knowledge was literally that handicapped people got the best parking spots. (Please forgive my ignorance and conceit; I’m just trying to be truthful here.) It was not until I was planted in my job, reading PCSP’s and filing away paperwork did I begin to realize that a couple of consumers would call me every day either to report the weather to me, or to tell me that he had made it home safely. I began to look forward to the weather report and I also began to worry when a certain person didn’t call in when he got home. It was then I became involved in their lives. As time passed, I became a Targeted Case Manager, I divorced and those persons that I was supposed to be helping began coming to me, with words of genuine friendship and caring. The chivalry my guys showed me and the open hurt that my ladies shared was truly a humbling experience. I know that they showed me much more than I can ever give. So when people ask why, this what I say. My clients show me how to be forgiving, humble and trusting and I try to help them to remember to brush their teeth and take a shower. What about you? How did you get started?
